Authorities are investigating an apparent random stabbing at a Northern California high school that resulted in the death of a teenage girl.

School officials say a middle-aged man came onto the campus of Stagg High School in the town of Stockton Monday and stabbed a 15-year-old girl multiple times with a knife.

Officials say the stabbing happened so quickly that security personnel were unable to protect the girl.

Stockton Police Deputy Chief Eric Kane told reporters late Monday that authorities were called shortly after the attack and that a school resource officer detained the attacker.

The girl was taken to a hospital in serious condition and died of her injuries.

Police identified the suspect as 52-year-old Anthony Gray.

Officials said it was unclear how or if Gray knew the girl, whose name was not released. The Sacramento Bee called it a random attack.

Stockton Unified School District Superintendent John Ramirez Jr. said the district will reassess campus security in light of the attack.

Stockton is about 45 miles south of Sacramento and 70 miles east of downtown San Francisco.
