Eintracht Frankfurt have not been able to completely refine a great football year. The team of coach Oliver Glasner only came to a 1:1 (0:1) in the prestigious Rhine-Main derby at the 1st FSV Mainz 05.

The Europa League winner can still go into the World Cup break satisfied, having managed to win the winter as an eighth finalist in the Champions League and the DFB Cup.

For the Mainzer, on the other hand, the last compulsory game this year came to a conciliatory end in front of 33,305 spectators after three Bundesliga defeats in a row. Jonathan Burkardt (40th minute) had scored the lead of the hosts, Ranal Kolo Muani (66th) scored the equalizer.

After a largely bloodless 0:1 performance at the last FC Schalke 04, the Mainzers were snappy and combative from the start four days later.

Svensson brings Burkardt for Ingvartsen

05-Coach Bo Svensson had drawn the consequence of the three defeats in a row and changed the starting line-up to four positions. In the offensive, he gave Burkardt the preference over Marcus Ingvartsen, who actually wanted to recommend himself once again for one of the last places in the Danish World Cup squad.

Burkardt proved to be a stroke of luck. Already in the ninth minute, the German junior national player caused danger when he came to the shot after a skillful pass from Leandro Barreiro, but the ball was deflected and flew past the goal. Seconds later, Eintracht were lucky again when the ex-Frankfurt Dominik Kohr just missed the right post from 20 meters. In the 40th minute, it was Burkardt who was able to overcome Kevin Trapp: the national goalkeeper fought off the first Burkardt shot with brilliant parades, as well as a follow-up shot from Karim Onisiwo, Trapp had no chance at Burkardt’s next attempt.

Concord in the first half with little energy

Champions League eighth-finalist Frankfurt could not build on the brilliant performance against 1899 Hoffenheim (4: 2), in which the Hessians had delighted with an offensive fireworks display. After 24 competitive matches, there was a lack of energy for another extraordinary game of Eintracht, which had previously scored 26 points in 14 league games.

The only chances the guests had before the break were by Randal Kolo Muani (11th), who was completely free standing after Daichi Kamada’s pass, the ball jumped far from his foot. Another possibility is Jesper Lindström (29th), who conquers the ball himself, runs towards the Mainz goal and is stopped shortly before the end.

Only after the restart did the Frankfurters mobilize all their forces again to add another success after seven victories in the last eight games. And once again it was Kolo Muani who was able to strike. After the addition of Djibril Sow, it is World Championship driver Mario Götze who plays into the run of Kolo Muani with an ingenious chip. From an acute angle, the Frenchman shot the ball into the mesh – it was his fifth hit.
