It is one of the most controversial sporting events in history: the Fifa World Cup in Qatar. Since it is much too hot to play football on site in the summer, the tournament has been moved to the winter and will now take place between November 20 and December 18. Due to the extremely critical human rights situation in Qatar, there had been massive criticism in recent years.

For the German national team, the World Cup adventure in the desert state began on November 14. The DFB team led by national coach Hansi Flick and captain Manuel Neuer started on Monday with a Lufthansa scheduled flight from Frankfurt to Muscat in Oman, where the last test match before the World Cup will take place on Wednesday against the national team there.

The morning after, we will continue to Qatar and to the quarter in the very north of the country, where the national team will reside during the tournament at the Zulal Wellness Resort in Al-Ruwais.

Before the test in Oman: the trio around Müller is missing in the final training session

Without the injured Thomas Müller and Antonio Rüdiger as well as DFB returnee Mario Götze, Hansi Flick had to play the only training session before the World Cup dress rehearsal of the national football team against Oman. The trio were absent from the Sultan Kabus Stadium in Muscat on Tuesday. Müller watched the training in the arena from the sidelines, Rüdiger stayed at the team hotel.

Their absence indicates that both regulars will not be available on Wednesday (18.00 / RTL), exactly one week before the German World Cup opener in Qatar against Japan. Müller and Rüdiger had completed a separate session at the stadium in the morning, the DFB said.

Huge new advertising on high-rise facade in Doha

Manuel Neuer can already be seen in Qatar. Larger than life, the DFB captain flaunts as an advertising figure for the World Cup on a high-rise facade in the capital Doha in a typical jubilant pose. The huge lettering runs across the entire height: “Valley__________ ent”.

In English, “talent” refers to goalkeeping skills and not to age, as is customary in German. The Bayern goalkeeper is finally contesting his fourth World Cup final for the national team. He has played 16 matches since his tournament debut in South Africa in 2010. At the age of 36, he has long since reached the advanced age of football.

Gnabry with title announcement: “We owe the fans something”

Serge Gnabry sees the DFB selection at the World Cup in Qatar as a special responsibility. “Especially after the weak last World Cup, we owe the fans something. We want to win the title, “the professional from Bayern Munich told the “Donaukurier”.

It is also clear that the Cup mission will not be easy,” the 27-year-old added: “I particularly appreciate the South Americans. Brazil, Argentina – I think they’re really good. There are also a lot of good teams in Europe, which we all already know. As soon as it goes into the knockout phase, it can be tricky against any opponent, they all have a lot of quality.”

He even has a bit of stage fright himself before his first World Cup. “In any case, it’s a new terrain. That’s why there’s a bit of nervousness behind it,” he said and explained: “It’s the games that you watched on TV as a child and dreamed of playing them one day. That’s why I’m extremely happy, of course.”

Shortly before the start of the Football World Cup in Qatar on Sunday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino called for a ceasefire in Ukraine during the final round at the G20 summit in Indonesia. “My request to all of you is to think about a temporary truce for a month during the World Cup, ” the head of the world federation said in his speech: “Or at least to set up some humanitarian corridors – or anything that could lead to the resumption of dialogue as a first step to peace.”

Infantino (“Football unites the world”) made an appeal to the summit participants, which include US President Joe Biden, Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. “We are not naive and think that football can solve the problems of the world. But the World Cup could be the occasion for a positive gesture or a sign,” the 52-year-old stressed: “They are the leaders of the world. You have the opportunity to influence the course of history.”

World Champion 2022: Matthew believes in Argentina

For record national player Lothar Matthäus, the new world champion comes from South America. “If I had to choose a team and make a World Cup tip, I would choose Argentina,” the 61-year-old wrote in his Sky column. Matthew also has the Brazilians and French on the bill for the upcoming tournament in Qatar. “But my feeling tends to Argentina. They have a great team spirit and a balanced, strong squad.”

The German national team also has a chance, Matthäus believes. “Of course I wish and hope very much that it will be Germany. I wish it for me, for all German fans and also for my friend Hansi Flick, “says Matthäus. “It would be nice if the positive run of German football, as is currently the case in the Champions and Europa League, continues at the World Cup and we return home with the Cup. As always, we have a really good chance.”

Neuer feels big World Cup greed flick as a guarantee of success?

Captain Manuel Neuer feels a great greed in the German national team before the World Cup in Qatar. “We are all very hungry and we know for ourselves that we have not convinced at the tournaments recently. That’s why we will do everything we can to get as far as possible and take the opportunity to play for this title, “the goalkeeper said in an interview with the “Münchner Merkur”.

At the controversial tournament in the desert (November 20 to December 18), national coach Hansi Flick could become the guarantor of success. “He can do it so well because he has a knowledge of human nature. Hansi knows how to tackle every single player,” said Neuer.

Black market tickets: Three arrests in Qatar

Shortly before the start of the World Cup, three men were arrested for selling tickets on the black market. This was announced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Qatar on Monday. Authorities released a photo of the suspects in handcuffs and with blurred faces. In front of them on a table were game tickets, banknotes, computers, telephones and car keys.

Details were not disclosed, neither about the age or nationality of the arrested men, nor about the place or date of the arrests. “The accused have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further legal action,” the ministry wrote on Twitter, stating that they face a fine of up to 250,000 Qatari riyals (about 67,000 euros) plus the sum of the confiscated money.

These were the first arrests due to black market sales for the World Cup. The organizers recently announced that 2.9 million of the 3.1 million available tickets were sold.
